Formulas: adding tax, tax = price × rate ÷ 100 and price with tax = price + tax. Removing tax, price before tax = price with tax ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). Taking 18% off a tax-inclusive price is not the same as removing 18% tax: 118 includes 18 of tax, not 21.24. "Half of the tax" helps where one tax is split into two equal parts, such as CGST and SGST on a sale within one Indian state.
