Formula: future value = current savings × (1 + r)ⁿ + monthly saving × ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) ÷ r, where r is the yearly rate ÷ 12 and n is the number of months. It assumes interest is compounded monthly, deposits are made at the end of each month and the rate stays the same. With 0% interest the monthly saving is simply (goal − current savings) ÷ months. For example, saving 10,000 from nothing in 12 months at 6% a year needs about 810.66 a month. The weekly figure is the monthly amount × 12 ÷ 52.

Real savings accounts and investments can pay variable rates, charge fees, and interest may be taxed; investment returns are never guaranteed and inflation reduces what money buys.
