Formula: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)², or 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)². Categories are the World Health Organization adult cut-offs. BMI is a screening measure only: it does not tell muscle from fat or show where fat is stored, and it is not meant for children and teenagers (who need age- and sex-specific charts), during pregnancy, or for some athletes and older adults. Some health services use lower cut-offs for people of South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean background, as health risks can rise at a lower BMI.
