What are Claude plugins?
A plugin is a package that adds abilities to Claude Code. One plugin can bundle:
- Skills
- Slash commands
- Subagents
- Hooks that run at set moments
- MCP servers that connect outside tools
Anthropic’s official marketplace, claude-plugins-official, listed over 300 plugins as of October 2026. Every plugin in this guide is from it.
Install a plugin for a job you do often. Remove it when you stop.
02
How to install a plugin
Inside Claude Code, run /plugin to browse the marketplace, or install directly:
/plugin install frontend-design@claude-plugins-official
Use /plugin again to see, disable, or uninstall installed plugins. Plugins that connect to a service need your account with that service.

Stay safe with plugins
- Install only plugins you trust, from sources you know
- Read what a plugin includes before installing
- Check what each connected service can access
- Remove plugins you no longer use
- Keep secrets out of prompts and plugin settings
Anthropic notes it cannot verify that third-party plugins work as intended or will not change. Review them like any software you install.
13
Avoid plugin overload
- Each plugin adds instructions and tools Claude must consider
- Too many overlapping plugins can confuse which tool to use
- Install for a real workflow, test it, then keep or remove it
Five plugins you use daily beat thirty you forgot you installed.
The golden rule
Do not install plugins to collect them. Install the one that removes your most repeated task this week.
