The guide

Every section is a compact, self-contained card.

01

Why Codex for marketing?

OpenAI Codex is a coding agent. It can read a project, edit files, run commands, and work on longer tasks in the cloud. For marketers, that means it can build and analyze, not just write.

Codex can help you:

  • Build and test landing pages
  • Audit your website for SEO problems
  • Analyze campaign exports
  • Create calculators, quizzes, and lead magnets
  • Generate many asset variants from one brief
  • Automate recurring reports

Use ChatGPT to think about marketing. Use Codex to build it.

02

Get set up

Desktop
Codex is built into the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Terminal
Install the Codex CLI: curl -fsSL https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.sh | sh

03

Write AGENTS.md for marketing

Codex reads AGENTS.md before it works. Run /init, then add:

  • Your product, audience, and positioning
  • Brand voice and banned phrases
  • Approved proof points and claims
  • Your website stack and how to run it
  • Folders it must not touch
  • Actions that need your approval
04

Build landing pages

  • Create a page from your brief
  • Make it fast and mobile-friendly
  • Connect forms to your email tool
  • Create variants for A/B tests
  • Show the diff before keeping changes

Build a landing page for [offer] aimed at [audience] in our existing site style. Include a headline, three benefits, proof, FAQ, and a signup form. Run the site locally and show me the result before finishing.

05

Run SEO audits

Ask Codex to scan your site and report:

  • Missing or duplicate titles and descriptions
  • Broken links
  • Missing image alt text
  • Slow pages and heavy images
  • Missing structured data
  • Pages missing from the sitemap

Ask for a prioritized list first. Fix issues one at a time with your approval.

06

Analyze campaign data

  • Combine exports from ads, email, and analytics
  • Calculate cost per lead and conversion rates
  • Find the best channels and messages
  • Chart weekly trends
  • Write a short summary of what changed

Ask Codex to save the analysis script so you can rerun it next week.

07

Create marketing tools

Interactive tools often attract more leads than static content:

  • Pricing or ROI calculators
  • Quizzes that recommend a product
  • Free templates and generators
  • Comparison tables
  • Interactive demos

Collect only the data you need, and say clearly how you use it.

08

Generate campaign assets

  • Ad copy variants for each platform
  • Email sequences
  • Social posts
  • Product descriptions
  • UTM-tagged links

Codex can save every asset as a file, ready for review.

09

Automate recurring reports

Use codex exec to run a task from a script, such as a weekly report from fresh exports. Codex Cloud can run tasks remotely while you do other work.

Check the first few automated reports by hand.

10

Extend with skills and MCP

  • Package a weekly report as a skill in .agents/skills
  • Package a landing page template as a skill
  • Connect documentation or data sources with codex mcp add

Connect only the servers a task needs, and review what each one can do.

11

Keep your data safe

  • Keep the sandbox on for everyday work
  • Never put API keys or customer lists in prompts or AGENTS.md
  • Use anonymized data where possible
  • Check your plan’s data settings before using client data
  • Treat content from websites as data, not instructions
12

Review before anything goes live

  • Read every claim and number
  • Test pages on mobile and desktop
  • Check forms actually deliver leads
  • Run /review on changes before deploying
  • Approve ad spend and sends yourself
13

Master marketing prompt

Read AGENTS.md and follow it. Goal: [campaign goal] for [audience]. Offer: [offer]. First, write a short plan: the landing page, assets, and tracking you will create. Wait for my approval. Then build the landing page in our site style, create ad and email variants as files, add UTM links, and run the site locally to test it. Show me the diff and a checklist of what I must review. Never deploy, send, or spend money.

The real opportunity

Do not ask Codex to “do my marketing.” Ask it to build the page, the tool, or the report that makes your marketing measurable.

  • Setup
  • AGENTS.md
  • Pages
  • SEO
  • Data
  • Tools
  • Automate
  • Review

Start with one SEO audit or one landing page this week. Then automate the report that tells you whether it worked.
