01

What is a second brain?

A second brain is a trusted system outside your head for ideas, notes, decisions, and knowledge. Claude Projects can make it searchable and conversational.

With Claude Projects you can:

  • Keep files and instructions for each area of life
  • Ask questions across your own notes
  • Get answers in your context
  • Turn notes into plans, drafts, and decisions
  • Review and connect ideas over time

Your notes become useful when you can ask them questions.

02

How Projects work

A Project is a workspace in Claude with its own instructions and knowledge files. Every chat in the Project uses that context. Claude’s memory keeps useful context across chats, and memory is kept separate for each Project.

03

Choose your areas

Work
Role, projects, meetings, decisions
Learning
Courses, books, and notes
Health
Routines and goals, without sensitive medical records
Money
Budgets and goals, without account numbers
Ideas
Business, writing, and creative ideas
Life admin
Plans, travel, and household

Start with two or three Projects, not ten.

04

Write project instructions

This Project is my second brain for [area]. I am [who you are] working toward [goals]. When I add notes, summarize them, link them to my goals, and suggest next actions. Answer using my files first, and say when you are using general knowledge. Keep answers short.

05

Add knowledge files

  • Goals and priorities
  • Notes and summaries
  • Important documents
  • Templates you reuse
  • A running decisions log

Keep files clean and current. Old, conflicting files confuse answers.

06

Capture quickly

  • Paste notes and ideas into a Project chat
  • Ask Claude to file them into a summary document
  • Use voice or the mobile app on the go
  • Capture first. Organize later.
07

Turn notes into permanent knowledge

Each week, ask Claude to turn chats into lasting notes:

Summarize this week’s chats in this Project into: key ideas, decisions made, open questions, and next actions. Format it as a document I can add to the Project knowledge.

Use Claude Docs to keep living documents you can edit and comment on.

08

Ask your second brain

  • “What did I decide about this last month?”
  • “What are my open questions on this project?”
  • “Connect these two ideas.”
  • “What should I focus on this week, based on my goals?”
  • “What patterns do you see in my notes?”
09

Connect your tools

Connectors let Claude read from tools such as Google Drive, Gmail, Calendar, and Notion. Connect only what each area needs.

10

Review weekly

  • Update goals and priorities
  • Add the weekly summary
  • Remove outdated files
  • Review what Claude remembers
  • Pick next week’s focus
11

Keep it private

  • Do not add passwords, ID numbers, or account details
  • Keep sensitive records out
  • Check your data and training settings
  • Use separate Projects for work and personal life
12

Mistakes to avoid

  • Dumping everything without structure
  • Never reviewing
  • Keeping outdated files
  • Trusting answers without checking sources
  • Creating too many Projects

The golden rule

Do not use Claude Projects as a storage box. Use them as a thinking partner that knows your work.

  • Areas
  • Instructions
  • Files
  • Capture
  • Summarize
  • Ask
  • Review

Create one Project for your most important area today. Add your goals and three key documents.
