Veo is Google’s video generation model. Veo 3.1 is the current Veo line as of October 2026, with Veo 3.1, Veo 3.1 Fast, and Veo 3.1 Lite. It generates video with native audio.
Google also offers Gemini Omni Flash, a separate newer video model in the Gemini app and Flow. This guide focuses on Veo.
Veo makes shots. You make the film.
02
Where to use Veo
Google Flow
Google’s AI filmmaking tool, best for cinematic work
Gemini app
Quick video generation
Gemini API and Vertex AI
For developers and automation
Google AI Plus and Pro include limited Veo 3.1 Fast access, and Ultra has the highest access. Check Google’s plans page for your country.
03
Think in shots
Cinematic videos are built from short shots, not one long generation. Plan a shot list:
Establishing shot
Medium shot of the subject
Close-up for emotion
Detail shots
A closing shot
04
Write director-style prompts
Subject and action
Setting and time of day
Camera: shot type, angle, movement
Lens and depth of field
Lighting and color grade
Mood
Sound: dialogue, effects, ambience
Slow dolly-in on an old fisherman mending a net on a wooden pier at golden hour, 50mm lens, shallow depth of field, warm amber light, gentle waves and distant gulls, calm and nostalgic.
05
Use camera language
Dolly-in
Builds intimacy or tension
Tracking shot
Follows the subject
Crane or drone
Reveals scale
Handheld
Adds realism and energy
Static wide
Lets a scene breathe
06
Start from images
Image-to-video gives you more control. Create or upload a still frame, then animate it. In Flow you can also use reference images for characters and objects, and first and last frames to control a shot.
07
Keep characters consistent
Use the same reference images in every shot
Describe the character the same way every time
Keep wardrobe and lighting consistent
Check each shot before moving on
08
Direct the audio
Veo 3.1 generates sound with the video. Describe dialogue in quotes, sound effects, and ambience. Replace or add music and voiceover in your editor if needed.
09
Extend and refine
Extend a good shot instead of regenerating
Generate several takes of key shots
Use Flow’s editing tools to adjust shots where available
Keep the best takes and move on
10
Edit into a film
Assemble shots in Flow or an editor such as DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro
Cut on action
Add music and sound design
Color-match shots
Add titles and captions
11
Control costs
Draft with Veo 3.1 Fast or Lite
Use full Veo 3.1 for final shots
Keep shots short
Plan shots before generating
12
Use Veo responsibly
Google adds SynthID watermarks to Veo videos
Do not create misleading videos of real people or events
Respect copyrighted characters and brands
Disclose realistic AI video where platforms require it
Follow Google’s generative AI use policy

Master shot prompt
[Shot type] of [subject] [action] in [setting] at [time of day].

Lighting: [lighting and color grade]. Mood: [mood].
Audio: [dialogue in quotes, sound effects, ambience].
Duration: [seconds]. Aspect ratio: [ratio].
The golden rule
Do not prompt a whole movie. Direct one great shot at a time, then edit them into a story.
