01

What hashtags do now

Hashtags help Instagram understand what your post is about and help people find it in search and topic pages. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, has said hashtags do not automatically increase reach. Think of them as labels, not boosters.

Five precise labels beat thirty random ones.

02

The five-hashtag limit

Since December 18, 2025, Instagram allows a maximum of five hashtags per post and Reel, replacing the old limit of 30. That makes every hashtag choice count.

03

Specific beats broad

Too broad
#food, #love, #instagood
Better
#mealprep, #veganrecipes
Most precise
#highproteinveganmeals

Broad tags are crowded and vague. Specific tags tell Instagram exactly who should see the post.

04

A simple five-tag formula

  • One topic tag: what the post is about
  • One audience tag: who it is for
  • One format or niche tag
  • One location tag, if local matters
  • One branded tag, if you have one
05

Research with AI

My post is about [topic] for [audience] in [location]. Suggest 15 hashtags from specific to broad, explain who uses each, and pick the best five for discovery. All lowercase.

Then search each tag on Instagram to check it is active and shows posts like yours.

06

Check what a tag shows

  • Open the hashtag page
  • Look at the top posts: are they similar to yours?
  • Avoid tags full of spam or unrelated content
  • Avoid tags that are restricted or show few posts
07

Branded hashtags

A unique branded hashtag helps you collect customer posts and run campaigns. Check it is not already used for something else.

08

Formatting

  • All lowercase
  • On one line at the end of the caption
  • Separated by single spaces
  • No hashtags in the middle of sentences unless natural
09

Other platforms

TikTok
A few relevant hashtags help categorise videos
LinkedIn
Three to five focused hashtags are plenty
X
One or two at most, or none
YouTube
A few in the description; the first three can show above the title
10

What not to do

  • Repeat the same five tags on every post
  • Use banned or spammy tags
  • Use trending tags unrelated to your post
  • Rely on hashtags instead of good content and keywords
11

Test and learn

  • Check reach from hashtags in post insights where shown
  • Compare similar posts with different tag sets
  • Ask AI to find patterns over a month

The golden rule

Do not treat hashtags as a growth hack. Use five precise, relevant labels that describe your post and audience, and put most of your effort into the content itself.

  • Five limit
  • Specific
  • Formula
  • Research
  • Branded
  • Formatting
  • Testing

Ask AI for 15 hashtag options for your next post, check each on Instagram, and keep the best five.
