01

What is the FLUX 3 upscaler?

Black Forest Labs’ upscaler is officially called FLUX Video Upscale. It launched on August 20, 2026, and is powered by FLUX 3 super-resolution. Instead of stretching pixels, it regenerates your video at a higher resolution, up to 4K.

  • Sharper faces and textures
  • Finer background detail
  • Keeps the original audio track
  • Works on AI-generated and real footage

Upscale last, after your edit is final.

02

Input limits

Length
Up to 20 seconds
File size
Up to 50MB
Resolution
Up to 2560 × 1440. It does not accept 4K input
Format
MP4, as a file or a public link

Clips over the limits are rejected before processing, and you are not charged for them.

03

Upscale factor

Choose an upscale factor from 1.5× to 3×. The default is 2×. Output keeps the source aspect ratio and is capped at about 14.4 megapixels per frame, roughly 4K, so large sources get less than the requested factor.

04

Precise vs creative mode

Precise
Preserves the source and sharpens it. Use it for faces, real people, products, and brand assets
Creative
The default. Adds and restores fine detail. Best for AI-generated footage, scenery, textures, and crowds

In creative mode, faces and products can drift. Switch to precise mode if anything changes that should not.

05

Guide it with a prompt

In creative mode, a short prompt can steer the added detail. Leave it empty for a neutral upscale.

A misty pine forest at dawn, fine needles and bark texture, soft natural light.

06

Pricing

You pay only for delivered output, per megapixel-second: the output megapixels per frame multiplied by the seconds of video. At launch, Black Forest Labs listed $0.07 per megapixel-second in precise mode and $0.10 in creative mode. A 10-second 1080p clip is about 20 megapixel-seconds. Check the current pricing page before you budget.

07

Where to use it

BFL API
The video-upscale-v1 endpoint, with polling or webhooks
ComfyUI
As a Black Forest Labs partner node
Other platforms
Some creative platforms offer it inside their own apps

API results come as a signed MP4 link that expires about an hour after it is ready, so download it promptly.

08

Built-in 2K and 4K in FLUX 3 Video

If you generate video with FLUX 3 Video, you can choose 2K or 4K output directly, added on September 10, 2026. Use the upscaler for clips made elsewhere, or for real footage.

09

Get the best results

  • Start from the least compressed source you have
  • Trim and edit first, then upscale
  • Use precise mode for anything with a recognizable face or product
  • Test a short clip before upscaling a batch
  • Compare before and after at full size
10

Troubleshooting

Clip rejected
Too long, too large, or above 2560 × 1440
Output smaller than expected
The 14.4-megapixel cap limited the factor
Faces changed
Switch to precise mode
Payment errors
Add credits or turn on auto top-up
11

Use it responsibly

  • Only upscale footage you own or have permission to use
  • Do not present AI-enhanced footage as untouched evidence or news footage
  • Keep the original file

The golden rule

Do not use upscaling to fix a bad shot. Use it to finish a good one, in the right mode.

  • Upscale
  • Precise
  • Creative
  • Factor
  • Pricing
  • API
  • 4K

Upscale one 10-second clip in both modes and compare faces and textures side by side.
