What is Filen?
Filen is end-to-end encrypted cloud storage based in Germany: files are encrypted on your device with AES-256 before upload, and its apps are open source. New accounts get 10 GB free when they pass a one-time sign-up check (connections that look like a VPN or proxy do not get it), and referrals add more. Paid plans start at €1.99 a month for 200 GiB, with web, desktop, mobile and command-line apps.
Pros
- Zero-knowledge, end-to-end encryption
- Open-source apps, including Linux and a CLI
- Very low-priced paid plans
Cons
- Free 10 GB is not granted when signing up through a VPN or proxy
- Smaller company than the big providers
Who should use Filen
Privacy-minded people who want cheap encrypted storage on every platform.
Who may not need it
People who need deep Office or Google Docs integration.
