What is Cap?
Cap is an open-source screen recorder for macOS and Windows that its makers call the open-source alternative to Loom. You record, edit locally and share a link, with comments, transcripts and analytics. The free plan is for personal use, with shareable links for recordings up to 5 minutes, and Cap Pro costs $12 per user a month, or $8.16 a month billed annually. The code is mostly AGPLv3, and the full platform can be self-hosted with Docker.
Pros
- Open source (mostly AGPLv3), with a self-hosting option
- Record, edit and share a link in one app
- Comments, transcripts and analytics on shares
Cons
- Free shareable links are limited to 5-minute recordings
- No Linux desktop app
Who should use Cap
Remote teams and creators who want Loom-style video messages with an open-source option.
Who may not need it
