What is Alacritty?

Alacritty is a cross-platform, OpenGL terminal emulator with sensible defaults and extensive configuration through a TOML file. It runs on BSD, Linux, macOS and Windows. It does not include tabs or splits itself, and the project suggests using a window manager or a terminal multiplexer for those.

Third-party open-source projects. We are not affiliated with their authors; repositories are provided as-is by their maintainers. Review each project's license, code and security before installing. See our Disclaimer.

Pros: what Alacritty does well

  • Very responsive terminal
  • Same settings on every system
  • Minimal, distraction-free window

Cons: where it falls short

  • No tabs or splits built in
  • Settings are edited in a text file

Who Alacritty is for

People who live in the terminal and want speed and simplicity.

Who can skip it
