How AI is changing work, which skills matter most, and how to prepare your career
Short answer
A free guide to the future of jobs in the AI era: what research says about jobs created and displaced, tasks vs jobs, roles growing and shrinking, skills employers want, how work changes inside jobs, new AI-era roles, what it means for students, workers, and managers, and a practical plan to stay valuable.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 estimated that between 2025 and 2030, about 170 million new jobs will be created and about 92 million displaced worldwide, a net gain of about 78 million. Employers also expected around 39% of workers’ core skills to change by 2030.
Forecasts differ, and no one knows exactly how fast change will come. But almost every study agrees that work is changing quickly.
AI changes tasks first. Jobs change as their tasks change.
02
Tasks, not whole jobs
Most jobs are a bundle of tasks. AI is taking over some tasks, such as drafting, summarizing, and data entry, while people focus more on judgment, relationships, and responsibility.
03
Roles growing
AI and machine learning specialists
Big data and analytics roles
Software and application developers
Cybersecurity specialists
Renewable energy and environmental roles
Care roles, such as nurses and social workers
Skilled trades and hands-on technical work
04
Roles shrinking
Routine clerical and data entry work
Cashiers and ticket clerks
Some administrative assistant tasks
Basic content production without expertise
Shrinking does not mean disappearing. Many of these jobs will change rather than vanish.
05
Skills that matter most
Analytical and critical thinking
Using AI and technology well
Creativity and problem-solving
Resilience, flexibility, and learning fast
Leadership and working with people
Communication and judgment
06
New roles in the AI era
AI operations and automation specialists
People who manage and review AI agents
AI trainers and evaluators
AI governance, risk, and policy roles
Experts who combine a field with strong AI skills
07
If you are a student
Learn your field deeply and use AI to learn faster
Build real projects and a portfolio
Practise communication and teamwork
Do not rely on AI to do your thinking
08
If you are working
Map which of your tasks AI can help with
Get great at using AI in your current job
Move toward work that needs judgment and relationships
Keep learning in small, steady steps
09
If you manage people
Redesign roles around tasks, not titles
Train teams to use AI safely
Measure outcomes, not hours
Support people through change honestly

A 90-day plan
Month 1
List your tasks and test AI on the repetitive ones
Month 2
Learn one AI skill deeply for your field
Month 3
Build a project that shows your new skills
The golden rule
Do not compete with AI on what it does best. Combine your judgment, expertise, and relationships with AI to do more than either could alone.
