Short answer
A free roundup of new Claude Code updates from version 2.1.309 (October 22, 2026) to 2.1.319 (November 6, 2026): background MCP tasks, a deny-instead-of-prompt permission setting, blocking writes outside your project, idle compaction, ultrathink at xhigh effort, subagent effort settings, sign-in expiry warnings, new /claude-api tools, the /loop and /tasks changes, the Opus 4.8 fast mode deprecation, and what to do next.
Claude Code ships new versions almost every few days. This guide covers versions 2.1.309 to 2.1.319, released between October 22 and November 6, 2026, and picks the changes most users will notice. Run claude update and check the official changelog for every detail.
Small updates add up. A few of these can change how you work every day.
02
Act now: Opus 4.8 fast mode is going away
Fast mode for Opus 4.8 was deprecated on October 30, 2026, and will be removed on November 30, 2026. After that, fast-mode requests on Opus 4.8 return an error. Switch to Opus 5.5 to keep the speed boost.
03
Long MCP jobs run in the background
In 2.1.319, when an MCP tool call runs as a long task, Claude Code moves it to the background and tells Claude when it finishes, so your session keeps going. You can turn this off with an environment variable if you prefer to wait.
04
Safer permissions
denyInsteadOfPrompting
A call that would wait on a permission prompt is denied and the turn carries on, useful for unattended runs
blockWritesOutsideWorkingDirectories
Write and Edit tools refuse paths outside your project folders, in every permission mode
Safer bypass mode
In the Desktop app and VS Code, dangerous rm commands are denied immediately in bypass mode
05
Thinking and effort
ultrathink now runs at xhigh effort on Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5, and Fable 5.1
CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_ULTRATHINK turns the keyword off
CLAUDE_CODE_SUBAGENT_EFFORT sets a default effort for subagents
Subagents on a different model use that model’s saved effort level
06
Longer sessions
Idle compaction in VS Code and the Desktop Code tab summarises big idle conversations
Usage messages now say “5-hour limit” instead of “session limit”
Background subagents move long shell commands to the background after 3 minutes
07
Sign-in and account
claude auth status shows when your sign-in expires
claude -p warns 10 days before a claude.ai sign-in ends
08
New tools for API builders
/claude-api latency-optimize finds slow settings in Claude API code and tests faster ones
/claude-api builds Managed Agents teams with dynamic workflows by default
New agents get an auto permission policy by default unless you opt out
09
Loops, tasks, and schedules
A self-paced /loop now ends when a turn finishes without rescheduling
/tasks shows finished subagents under “Earlier in this session”
/schedule warns when a new cloud task gets connectors you did not ask for
10
For teams and admins
Team and Enterprise server-managed settings apply without an approval prompt
Gateway admins get cost reports, pooled budgets, and more controls
ultrareview now requires workspace trust
11
What to do next
Update Claude Code
Move off Opus 4.8 fast mode before November 30
Turn on blockWritesOutsideWorkingDirectories for extra safety
Try ultrathink on your hardest task
Skim the official changelog weekly
The golden rule
Do not let updates pile up unread. Update often, act on deprecations early, and turn on the new safety settings before you need them.
